Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Injections & Treatment

Platelet-rich plasma is a product obtained from whole blood (patient's blood) that contains a significantly greater concentration of platelets over baseline, and has been shown across many fields of study to  stimulate cell growth and tissue repair.  PRP treatments are highly effective for the treatment of acne scarring, hair loss, and fine wrinkling around the mouth and eyes.  They are considered a “low down-time” procedure that is effective and “natural”, as one’s own serum is used.

Platelet rich plasma treatments are gaining popularity in cosmetic medicine because of the unique ability for PRP to promote collagen synthesis, as well as to enhance the activity of extracellular matrix components, such as matrix metalloproteinases and hyaluronic acid, that promote healthy neocollagenesis, stem cell proliferation, and improve skin volume and turgor.  In dermatology, PRP is directly injected into the skin, and it is often used in conjunction with other cosmetic procedures such as microneedling and lasers to enhance their effects.

Harvesting platelet-rich plasma from whole blood is an in-office procedure, requiring a sample of the patient’s blood and a specific process of centrifuge that allows the platelet rich component of plasma to separate from a buffy coat and red cells.
